History

In mid- eighteenth century , the Santiago de Cali city, had less than 5,000 habitants , extending to the San Antonio's hill. In the main church of San Pedro was a chapel dedicated to San Antonio de Padua, which was frequented by the faithful at Mass on Sundays and holidays. In 1742 , given the difficulties faced by the faithful to attend Mass in the main church , the pastor José  de Alegria saw the need to create a parish church in San Antonio's hill.

With the donation of 1000 patacones from Juan de Orejuela after his death , the project of construction of the church began on the hill , It was possible thanks to the land donated by Juan Francisco Garcés de Aguilar in 1746 the church began building and was erected in 1747.
In 1786 is known from historical references that the chapel had an effigy of San Antonio in the central niche , on the right an image of Nuestra Señora de Belén and to the left an image of San Joaquin and Santa Ana. The chapel was rebuilt for the first time this year and then in 1803. In 1944 to celebrate 200 years , a restoration was performed.
